I-70/71 Mound Street Connector Project

Project Overview:

The Mound Street Connector Project will:

• Build a new bridge that will provide access from I-70 west into downtown at Mound Street.
• This new bridge will travel over what is known currently as the “downtown east split.”
• Mound Street will be streetscaped with trees, brick crosswalks, sidewalks, decorative street lights and traffic signals, and changed to one-way westbound traffic from Fourth Street to Washington Street (at the new ramp).
• The Bridge at 18th Street will be completely rebuilt.
• The 4th Street ramp from I-70 west will close after the new Mound Street ramp opens.
• The Fulton entrance ramp to I-71 north will close permanently.

The first project on the I-70/71 corridor, the reconstruction of Interstates 71 and 670, began in 2011, and is currently about 75% complete. Weather permitting, all travel movements are expected to be open on the I-71/670 project by this November.

I-70/Hilliard-Rome Road Construction

Construction will begin to reduce congestion at I-70 and Hilliard-Rome Road on the West Side of Franklin County.

The project will build two additional lanes on the ramp from I-70 west to Hilliard Rome Road north, which will improve safety by reducing weaving, or motorists “jockeying” for position with thru traffic. ODOT will also add a traffic signal at the end of the exit ramps from I-70 west to Hilliard-Rome Road.

Along with the ramp work, an additional lane will be constructed in each direction on Hilliard Rome Road from I-70 to north of Renner Road at the Meijer driveway. The extra lane will reduce congestion and back-ups onto the ramps at I-70.

Weather permitting, the contractor will place concrete barrier wall along the exit ramps from I-70 west to Hilliard-Rome Road starting Monday (4/14) to give crews room to work on the ramps.

Two lanes in each direction will be maintained on Hilliard-Rome Road. Additional lane closures will be permited during overnight and off-peak hours only.

These improvements, estimated to cost $4.8 million, are expected to be completed by Fall of this year. (ODOT)

South High Street Bridge over S.R. 104 Update

Update:

Motorists and cyclists are reminded to be alert and use extra caution when traveling on South High Street (U.S. 23) over S.R. 104.  A temporary lane configuration is in place following a January 8 accident that damaged a part of the bridge.

Northbound traffic on South High Street should be alert for a lane shift to the left. All exit and entrance ramps at this location remain open, but the temporary lane configuration may cause delays for South High Street traffic, especially during weekday morning and evening rush hours. This current configuration will be in place through at least mid-year. A project to rehabilitate the bridge and a more precise schedule for the work are being expedited.  (Columbus/ODOT)

ODOT crews have restored traffic flow on South High Street and S.R. 104. The bridge there was damaged when it was struck by a truck in early January.

Two lanes of traffic in each direction are open on South High Street over S.R. 104. However, there are no designated turn lanes on the bridge, which will cause minor delays during peak travel times. All lanes of S.R. 104 east and west under South High Street are open in the same configuration that they were prior to the crash.

This traffic pattern will be in place for at least six months.

Plans previously in place to rehabilitate the bridge are being expedited.

Heavy Traffic Expected: On and Near I-71 near the Polaris/Gemini Exit

Because of the opening of the new Ikea retail outlet, motorists are encouraged to be alert for stopped traffic, delays and possible ramp or lane restrictions in and near the interchange of I-71 and Polaris Parkway/Gemini Place beginning about Wednesday, June 7. • From Polaris, drivers should take Worthington Road to eastbound IKEA Way
  • Consider E. Powell Road and other east/west routes as alternates to Polaris Parkway and Gemini Place/Ikea Way

US 23 north drivers will be on a new ramp to I-270 west that will go under a new bridge before joining US 23 south traffic on the temporary ramp to I-270 west or SR 315. Since both directions of US 23 will now be using this ramp, US 23 south will now have to YIELD to US 23 north traffic at the merge point.  Please watch lane assignments and signage carefully, especially for the first few days of the new configuration.

In order for crews to open the new ramp, traffic will be impacted overnight. Here's what you can expect tonight, Monday June 12:

I-270 between US 23 and SR 315:

  • 7 PM: I-270 west will be reduced to three lanes
  • 8 PM: Ramp from US 23 North to I-270 West closes
    • Detour: US 23 north to I-270 east to Cleveland Avenue to I-270 West
  • 9 PM: I-270 West will be reduced to two lanes
  • 11 PM: Ramp from US 23 South to I-270 West/SR 315 closes
    • Detour: US 23 south to SR 161 west to SR 315 North
  • 5 AM, Tuesday morning, June 13: All lanes and ramps open in their new configuration

Red White and Boom! Road Closures and Tips

Red, White and Boom! 2017 takes place on Monday, July 3. Please see below for information on closures and restrictions as well as tips for getting to and from the celebration easily and safely.

Red, White and Boom Travel Tips:

  • Arrive as early as possible on Monday, preferably before 5 p.m. (the parade starts at 6 p.m.). This can help you beat the congestion and find a good spot for viewing. Entertainment and events begin at noon.
  • Check the closed streets list carefully and plan to arrive well before scheduled closures.  A large number of streets close Friday at 6 p.m. Those attending events at COSI or Nationwide Arena, especially, need to plan on arriving before 6 p.m.
  • Carpool or take COTA. To reduce parking problems and congestion, share a ride to the Boom! COTA riders will have free access to an outstanding view of the fireworks from inside Huntington Park. COTA will deploy a large number of additional buses to provide frequent service to and from several Park and Rides located around Franklin County as well as extended service on many routes serving downtown. COTA staff will be available to provide assistance downtown and at the Park and Rides. COTA riders: When you leave for the celebration, your driver will be available to tell you the best place to catch your bus to get back. Check COTA’s Red, White and Boom! Website or call (614) 228-1776 for more details.
  • Don’t leave immediately after the fireworks. Entertainment, including live music is available after the fireworks. COTA buses leave for Park and Rides as late as midnight.
  • Be alert for pedestrians and cyclists. Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to wear bright or reflective colors for increased visibility.
  • A note for pedestrians from the Columbus Division of Police: At the end of the evening, pedestrians need to stay on the sidewalks and cross streets at crosswalks. In the past, some pedestrians leaving the event have walked in the middle of open streets, blocking car, bus and emergency vehicle travel. This is illegal and unsafe.
  • Watch carefully where you park. Various parking restrictions will be in place to help with the flow of traffic before, during and after the event.

North Side Fix I-270, US 23 (North High Street) and SR 315

North Side Fix I-270, US 23 (North High Street) and SR 315

Project Overview:

This project will make the I-270/US23 north side interchange safer by increasing capacity and improving traffic flow. Additional improvemnts have been added to the project including work on the SR 315/I-270 interchange.

1. Reconfigure two of the ramps at the interchange of I-270 and US 23 (North High street) Two of the loop ramps, the ramp from I-270 E to US 23 N and the ramp from I270 W to US 23 S, will be reconfigured. ODOT will also add traffic signals at each of the new ramps to allow for better flow of traffic.
2. Widen US 23 ODOT will widen US 23 from Northwoods Boulevard to Lazelle Road from two lanes to three lanes in each direction. ODOT will also build an additional lane on US 23 southbound from I-270 to Northwoods Boulevard.
3. Construct two northbound express lanes on US 23 ODOT will build two lanes under the surface roads that will carry through traffic. The “trench,” as we call it, will begin just north of I-270 and end south of Northwoods Boulevard North. If you are driving in the “trench” will not be able to access Campus View Boulevard and Flint Road.
4. High Street over I-270 A new, decorative fence with the name “Worthington” on it will be built along the US 23 bridge over I-270. Pillars with brick pattern and coloring and limestone caps will be featured on both sides of the bridge, matching walls will be built adjacent to the ramps at the interchange.

Click the link below to see video animation to help drivers travel safely through the trench.

While opening the trench and other access points is a major milestone, there is still much to finish on the project.

The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph on I-270 between US 23 and SR 315 as major construction to build new ramps and bridges is ongoing. Motorists should be aware of new ramp configurations:

  • Drivers coming from US 23 south to I-270 west will be on the ramp for a mile and pass over SR 315 before using the temporary ramp to merge onto I-270 west.
  • I-270 west traffic exiting at SR 315 will exit sooner – merge into the right lane for SR 315 north, stay in left lane on the ramp for SR 315 south.
  • Finally, traffic coming from SR 315 north to I-270 should stay in the left lane on the ramp. Drivers will go a mile on the ramp and travel under US 23 before merging onto I-270 east.

Completion: June 2017
