New electronic “Watch for Stopped Traffic” signs have been installed at 3 locations in Franklin County. These signs light up with the message “Watch for Stopped Traffic” when a sensor under the pavement a half mile ahead of the sign detects stopped traffic. The three new warning signs are located on southbound I-270 just south of the E. Broad Street ramp, southbound I-270 at the E. Main Street ramp; and at eastbound I-70, just west of downtown near the W. Broad Street entrance ramp.
Over the next few days, the new overhead messaging system will be tested before the signs are fully operational. Motorists should always watch for stopped or slowed traffic. However, when these signs are illuminated, motorists should carefully watch their speed, drive with extra caution and be ready to slow and stop.
If these warning signs prove to be effective and the number of crashes is reduced, ODOT may install these overhead signs in other congested areas throughout the state. (ODOT)
